Hi Rachel
My wife and I had recently celebrated 40 years of marriage and were planning a day in London at short notice. I found the Lamb Tavern on the Leadenhall Market website (the pub is situated within the grounds of the market itself). It looked inviting - a beautiful olde worlde building full of character. I was planning to give my wife a surprise and hoped it would fit the bill. In the end, it exceeded both our expectations.
Unable to print out the pub's 25 pounds voucher, I emailed an initial request to the pub's website the night before, and received a positive reply within half an hour, saying that in the circumstances I wouldn't need to show it! I booked a table for midday and after a browse around the market we arrived, and were treated like royal guests.
We were given what was clearly the best table on the first floor overlooking the hustle and bustle of the indoor market, and as we sat down we noticed an anniversary card that the staff had left for us. My wife was bowled over! A great start and it was to get better...
Our voucher gave us two main courses and a bottle of wine. During our meal we had four different servers, but the quality of the service was standardised at the highest level. Nothing was too much trouble. We were made to feel very special.
My wife had the haddock and chips; I opted for the pork loin and mash. The hand-made chips were huge, oblong, and tasted delicious; the mash was a kind of puree that melted in the mouth. Both the haddock and the pork were perfect in size and quality. Three additional main meals on offer ensured that we were spoilt for choice.
The house white wine (French) was a perfectly acceptable accompaniment to our meal, enhanced by the warm gesture on behalf of Rachel (the manager) to give us a dessert on the house - as if to cement our marital status in perpetuity!
By 12.45pm there were only two other couples in the restaurant apart from ourselves. As residents of France, we're used to seeing workers with an eye on the clock for the 12.00pm deadline, and the restaurants in full swing by 12.15pm! We needn't have worried - by 1 o'clock there wasn't a spare table in the Tavern's restaurant - the timing clearly a reflection of the cultural difference in the work ethic of the two countries, and a testimony to the pub's continuing attraction for workers in the City who want a quality lunch with attentive service in decorative surroundings.
The animated buzz of conversation added to the relaxed atmosphere and our sense of well-being. And then, yet another surprise - an unopened bottle of Prosecco was brought to our table - compliments of the boss!
We left after 2 hours of pure indulgence, heartened by the service, the quality and quantity of the food, and the atmosphere. For the rest of the day we pursued various cultural activities in London, but all of them combined did not surpass our experience at the Lamb. This will be our first port of call when we're next in London - and we won't wait another 40 years!
A big 'thank you' to all the staff - including the chef who rarely gets a mention in any feedback - for giving us a day to remember.
